Tom Mboya Mausoleum

The late Tom Mboya was one of Kenya’s most colourful politicians of the independence era. A charismatic trade union leader, he was the engine behind what came to be known as the “Mboya Airlift” that saw several thousand young Kenyans fly to the USA for university education in the early 1960s, many of whom later became prominent in independent Kenya. After Independence, Mboya became first Minister for Labour, then Minister for Constitutional Affairs and finally Minister for Economic Planning, he was assassinated in 1969 at the age of 39.

The mausoleum near Kasawanga on Rusinga Island contains various mementos and gifts that Mboya received in his lifetime and is a moving experience to any visitor.
